They proudly said how they had made a bed for him in a kitchen corner cupboard and that he liked it. He was a bit bald but they said he had reacted badly to some shampoo they had bought.

I liked the look of him but he was a little nervous when meeting new people but would then quickly decide they were alright and be pleasant. However I decided that was a reflection of his mistress so we would probably find that diminished with time. I put him on the lead and he bit straight through it, so knotted it back together and found he just pulled and leapt about so probably never gone for a walk on a lead before. In the car and he was very good, he met the other dogs in there as well as our dogs are used to sharing the car with Labradors and Spaniels.

We got him home and looked him over properly found a host of fleas and lots of parasite bites, evidently the parasites were not allergic to the shampoo and I suspect Eustace wasn't either. So went to the vet with him the next day to get Comfortis and Wormer and his chip changed. His original name was Ace but Kim decided this did not fit with our houseful of animals nor should he have the same name as it would remind him of where he had come from. We came up with Eustace which fits with the other dogs our Jack Russells Jemima, Hugo, and Lavinia, and it has a bit of the old name but a fresh beginning.

He now has a bed in the Drawing Room and has had a go at the door but that is repairable. He likes a good bit of wood to chew or a bone and old Christmas cards are a favourite. He would probably have had his bed in the Kitchen next to the Rayburn but the cats have got kittens in the Kitchen so he got upgraded!

After a week Eustace comes when called, over both a good distance and even when he is really interested in what he is looking at. He is better on the lead but is still not heeling as I would like he now walks on a tight lead, but it is improving. He feels sitting is something that he knows I like him to do but he is not sure it is really necessary.

I was surprised by him because puppies that we have had in the past you train as they grow so you never have a nearly full size Labrador giving it full strength at pulling and lunging on a lead much stronger than I expected! Second he is a little strange with other dogs I hope this is lack of socialisation but he will sniff them persistently, fine when you first meet someone but when you are in the same house you do not need to exchange details quite so often or in such detail. We now have a new command of Rude which he is beginning to get the idea of. We have never had a dog that interested in sniffing other dogs genitalia and *****. He is intact but I have had other dogs and they were not this obsessive any one else had a dog like this.

If I can get him right he could be an excellent gundog he has a good mouth and carries things lightly. He watches things closely and is quite affectionate and is quite willing. Just needs time and patience if not he will make a good pet

Dog pedigree kennel club

Hi just looking a some dog pedigree on the kennel club may be a silly question but what is the blue circle with a + arrow and the same in red

Thanks

Anybody bought A Part Or Trained Gun Dog And If So How Did It Turn Out ?

Every one of my dogs over the last 60 years I have trained myself , the first one was good on duck but that was about all and yet looking back that first Lab learnt me more about dogs than I learnt him to be a trained gun dog , everyone after that first one I could see the improvements and all of them have been life long friends and my life would had been a lot poorer without them .

Now I am by myself and no longer a Spring chicken I don't think I can take on another puppy , I would then have a very young dog and a dog who is way past his peak , whatever I decide I don't want to be without a working dog and I was thinking in buying a Lab around 2 to 3 years old and trained to a reasonable standard that I could carry on with it's progress , this is something I have never done before and wondered if any member have gone down the same road and if they had , what was the outcome . There is little whining or whimpering.

Im hoping to move him to an outdoor run and kennel that I have ready. It is situated next to our chicken coop, for company... or distraction, depending on how you see it.

I have been feeding him only in the outdoor kennel for approximately 3 weeks. During thos last week or so I have started to leave him in there after feeding and leaving him with a chew bone hidden in his kennel for him to find.

He'll sit in there for approximately 45 mins or so before his barking becomes a little too much and for the sake of neighbours, I fetch him in. He will happily chew on his bone for 25, 30 mins before he makes any noise.

Are there any tips from anyone who has done this before in order to kennel train him as quietly as possible, just so im being fair to other people in ear shot?

Any advice much appreciated! :)

Dogs/cooked Pork

Does anyone feed their dog cooked pork? I have a 2 year old lab bitch who if fed will always puke when going for a car ride no matter the distance or if not fed will just get very heavy exessive dribble. I have been building her up with short journeys with a long walk training and then feeding her at the end before coming home and that's working well. She still dribbles slightly heavy but has improved a lot. But the snag is the syndicate im in we drive between every drive and in other people's vehicles so she's getting better but still worried about the actual shoot days. as I think she will soon learn that drive is going to end with her getting to work and not matter.

This wasn't such an issue last year as was in 2 shoots one of which was a short drive then ad walked between drives where I would take her along with another I beat on and will be this year and a second which is the current where would be driving between drives and I would take my old boy there but his arthritis is getting to much for him to do much now so he will only be able to do bits now and I have 2 young lab dogs in training but to young for this season so she is my only real dog for the syndicate so really just wanting to try make it as least likely for anything to happen possible as I really can't be taking her for her to be puking in the back of someone else's vehicle.

So just wondereing if anyone has any remedies or know of anything which I could give her just to hopefully make it Evan less likely for any issues to occure. As have been told ginger is a natural product which settles the stomach and to feed her ginger biscuits as her meal on the day so going to try doing so at the week end then take her for a long walk but any other suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated thank you.

My new apprentice

I had planned on doing this thread months ago, but never got around to it. However seeing that two of the boys decided to have a wee set to. These photos are of the second wrapping about an hour after the first, once I had cleaned the house of the blood that was throughout.

You can see the cut line on the inner ear, at this point the bleeding has been stopped. I have packed the wound with wound powder and it is now ready to be bandaged.

At this point, a clean dry dressing is placed over the ear encasing the tip and the cut. Fold the dressing neatly.

The ear is then folded back across the skull for support and to keep it immobalized. Once secured the dog will be able to shake his head without re-opening the wound.

The ear is then wrapped securly to the top of the head using a cloth bandage. Be sure not to wrap too tightly as the bandage must go under the throat.

Now repeat the wrapping using Vet Wrap.

On the opposite side of the skull, be certain to wrap around both sides of the uninjured ear. This will allow the dog to continue hearing and keep the bandage firmly in place.

If needed you can now get the dog to the vet for stitches or allow the ear to heel without it reopening everytime the head is shaken or the ear bumped.

NTTF

Without getting into a debate about who does or does not get their working dogs vaccinated and why as in 60+ years of multi working dog ownership I've more than likely heard and read all the pro's and cons before. For those that do get their dogs jabbed have you heard anything about the Lepto 2 vaccine being discontinued so the only choice now will be Lepto 4.
