Dull thud equals problem.
Most likely a loose rib.
Not a cheap fix.
Unless you particularly want that gun I would say walk away.

All of the above.

All sxs barrels have a "ring." If they don't, remove the extractors and try again as sometimes the extractors can interfere. (don't ask me why!)  No ring is a loose rib or ribs. Can be "tacked" down but you are sealing in the problem. Proper fix is a lot of money.

I wouldn’t expect a rib to make any difference, was it an old gun,no pitting? Barrels usually don’t ring when they are pitted or part of the rib is loose.

Pitted barrels do ring. It's the ribs that are loose is why they don't ring.

Even good Damascus or wire wound barrels dont ring too well. Could this be the answer.

They should. And if they don't and the ribs are sound it's maybe because they are full of rust inside. Take them off the action and tip them up and down like an hour glass and listen for rust moving.
