Posted October 6, 2024Oct 6 comment_4154987 We have a lakeside lodge in East Yorkshire. It comes with fishing and a fishing platform . I don’t have any course fishing tackle but do have a fly rod from my trout lake days. Our lake has the usual silvers as well as carp, tench, barbel chub etc. Am I likely to encounter any issues (apart from not catching anything) using a fly set up. If needs be I will spend a few quid on some course tackle but wondered about giving the fly a go
October 6, 2024Oct 6 comment_4154994 You may hit a big fish. So use an appropriate cast as in what the Americans call a leader? If that's what you want to do tie an all white fly. Such as white body, white hackle, white tail. So from a old school sinking "baby doll" in white to variations on that like a white montana or with, as said white hackle and white tail so a "white zulu" except that a white zulu never really was ever a fly. Or a white "bumble"? Depends on what you've got to hand.Essentially trying to replicate a piece of floating or sinking bread or a drowning maggot. Imitating what the fish are most likely to be dosed with by other non-fly anglers. Or at this time of year maybe a "daddy" or drowning daddy? For the line maybe a Wet 1? October 6, 2024Oct 6 comment_4155000 Give it a go, lots of coarse fish are caught on fly. Have a look on you tube!
October 6, 2024Oct 6 Community Expert comment_4155011 It's not usual or necessary to use actual 'flies' etc for using that tackle for general coarse fish. Obviously there are some exceptions, if going for the predator type fish, including chub. This style, as mentioned above, actually lends itself well to surface fishing for carp in the warmer months, using dig biscuits, chum mixers and the like. Hope that helps ?
October 7, 2024Oct 7 Community Expert comment_4155050 In the past I've used a small fly rod quite happily with normal coarse tackle - but I did use a normal reel, not a fly reel or fly line. Worked well.
October 7, 2024Oct 7 comment_4155078 An interesting fly I’ve used on coarse fish is the black spider dry fly or hackled variant. Fished early evening when dace or roach are rising or surface feeding. It imitates a wind blown terrestrial.
